BAYELSA YOUTHS DEFY HEAVY RAINS, CELEBRATES AS GOV DICKSON WINS ANOTHER LEGAL BATTLE

Hundreds of youths took to the streets of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital, to express solidarity with Governor Seriake Dickson over a Federal High Court ruling in his favour on Wednesday.

The youths, who defied the heavy downpour embarked on a peaceful procession mainly along the busy Mbiama-Yenagoa road and chanted solidarity songs for the governor over his developmental strides in the state. Addressing them at the Gate of Government House, Yenagoa, the Chief of Staff, Dame Didi Walson-Jack described the ruling as a victory not only for the governor but also for democracy and the people of the state.

Dame Didi noted that the victory marks the present administration’s move to ensure that the state is restored to its lost glory. While thanking the youths for their show of concern and solidarity, the Chief of Staff assured them of government’s determination to continually carry youths along in its scheme of things.

Her words, “This victory marks the Restoration Agenda train’s move to ensure that Bayelsa State is restored to her glory. You are aware that the Government of Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson has the youths as a very important keystone of the administration and therefore it gives me pleasure to thank you all for coming to show this solidarity.”

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Lawrence Ewrudjakpo, urged Bayelsans to see the victory as a call on them to join hands with the Dickson-led administration to move the state forward. Mr. Ewrudjakpo described the solidarity visit as well conceived idea, noting that the current government is doing well in the area of youth development in the state.

His words: I want to use this opportunity to call on all Bayelsans especially those who still feel aggrieved about the electoral process to forget about their grievances.

In other parts of this country, once elections have been concluded, the opposition comes to join hands with the government to work for the development of the state and not distract it with litigations because as a public officer, if you are serving people and you have a lot of cases in court, it will distract you if you are not a very focused person.”

Also, speaking, a member of the governor’s legal team, Barr. Kemeasuode Wodu, expressed dismay at the plethora of litigations that greeted Governor Dickson’s victory at the 2012 gubernatorial elections.

According to Barr. Wodu, the ruling has put a final stop to Chief Timipre Sylva’s bid to invalidate Governor Dickson’s election as governor of Bayelsa State. He said, “The court today (Wednesday) has held that the former governor (Chief Sylva) can no longer insist on being governor based on the 2011 primary election he won.

The court said it’s the end of that matter and we hope that he will end it at this stage.” In his remarks, the Director General of Restoration Youth Network, REYNET, Mr. Timipere Asari expressed delight at the judgment, adding that it would enable the restoration team to be more focused in driving its development agenda.
