BAYELSA GOVT TAKE DELIVERY OF VEHICLES FOR NEW TRANSPORT SCHEME


With the ban on the operation of motorcycles in the state capital, Yenagoa coming into effect at the end of this month, Government has concluded arrangements to float a new transport scheme.
The scheme is intended to address the envisaged effects the ban will have on residents of Yenagoa and its environs.
Inspecting the first set of salon cars for the scheme at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Yenagoa Bayelsa state Governor Hon. Seriake Dickson described the arrival of the vehicles as a clear demonstration of Government’s commitment to the welfare of the citizenry.
The Governor called on likely beneficiaries of the scheme to adhere strictly to the principles and terms of the scheme so that it does not suffer similar setbacks of previous programmes in the sector.
He stated that, for a start government was investing about N500 million for the scheme, adding that it will be improved upon depending on the outcome of the initial investment.
Governor Dickson, who test drove in one of the cars expressed satisfaction with the quality of the vehicles noted that, government’s decision to ban motorcycle operations in the state capital was informed by the increasing rate of injuries and deaths from motorcycle related accidents.
The Governor was accompanied by the Deputy Retired Gboribiogha John Jonah, the secretary to the state government Professor Edmund Allison – Oguru and other members of the state executive council.
Over 200 vehicles will be procured by government to kick start the new transport scheme.
